the tuner of silences

Mia Couto is a wellknown writer form Mozambique. He is new to me, but I am still learning about the literature produced by writers from Africa.

There are two strands in this novel. One is about a the boy Mwanito and his brother and father who withdraw into the bush, the other strand is about a Portuguese woman who travels to Mozambique to find out about the disappearence of her husband.

The two strands do get together and clash.

The translator has given a very nice introduction to the work of Mia Counto.

I enjoy reading about Africa. New books. Old books. By African writers. By non-African writers. Novel. History. Travel. Biographies. Autobiographies. Politics. Colonialism. Poetry.
