When an African travelwriter writes about Africa he writes from within. This is the suggestion that I hear in the title of this blog. I did not invent the title myself. I took it from an article about African travelwriting.
It sounds very nice. Especially as compared to all the travellers and writers from outside the continent. An African writer is the writer from inside. It is an inside job.
But as we know Africa is not a country, it is continent and not a small one. The traveller who leaves the Drakensberge and travels all the way North to the Atlasmountains might well be a stranger. Not just for the colour of his skin, but maybe also for his religion and his culture. He will be struggling with the language. The average Motloung does not speak the Berber-language.
Let travelling be a journey from the outside to the unknown inside.
