wole soyinka’s lecture in memory of

She planted trees.
By the tens, the hundreds, the thousands.
She encouraged people to take care of their environment.
She spoke out against politicians who were spearheading destruction and doom.
She became a politician herself.
And she received a Nobel Prize.
Her name is Wangari Maathai.

Wole Soyinka came all the way from Nigeria to Nairobi, Kenya, to speak in memory of her at the StoryMoja Festival. These are a few notes from the lecture and the resulting discussion.
