One of the topics Christine Emmett talks about with the South African writer Ivan Vladislavic is ‘gated communities’. These communities, carefully shielded from their environment, crop up at different places in the country. Sometimes they are themed, making the place an ‘imported’ cluster of buildings and streets that look like a place in e.g. Italy.
