Each country has to come to terms with its own past. The past with its lighter sides and its darker sides and its shady bits. The past is not one object with fixed colours, or a lack of colours. Our views of the past may change, due to ourselves, due to new information on our past.
Jacob Dlamini wrote about the apartheid past of South Africa. His book is titled ‘Askari’ and the book is all about the non-whites who supported the apartheid system and worked for it. Dlamini has opened a door that was kept closed and locked. He has inched forward and gave us a shock, rightly so.
