new ghandi book aims

The name of Ghandi is linked to the nation of India. Often it is overlooked that his life and actions are linked to another country as well: South Africa. Mahatma Ghandi left India, where he was born in 1869, to travelled to England in 1888 to study Law at University College of London. In the year 1891 he finished his studies and decided to travel back to India. He tried to practice as a lawyer, but he was not successfull. In 1893 he moved to South Africa, where he started a practice in Natal. He stayed in South Africa till 1914.

Two writers, Ashwin Desai and Goolam Vahed, had a closer look at those years in South Africa and they wrote a book about it. The title of the book is: “The South African Gandhi: Stretcher-Bearer of Empire”.

Here you will find an interview with the two writers.

I enjoy reading about Africa. New books. Old books. By African writers. By non-African writers. Novel. History. Travel. Biographies. Autobiographies. Politics. Colonialism. Poetry.
