The struggle for democracy and human rights in South Africa has been a long and difficult struggle. One of the results of this struggle is an stream of books on this struggle. Some of these books are highly personal. Part of the struggle was within the borders of South Africa, some left the country and did their part in the struggle, some in neighbouring countries, some went to Europe. One of those who went to Europe (The Netherlands, England) was Gerald Kraak (1956 – 2014). At first he went to the country where his father was born, The Netherlands.

And Gerald started writing. Here you find a part of an unfinished manuscript about the struggle after the year 1976.

In Amsterdam, probably somewhere in the early '80s. Photographer unknown.
