‘Fear of causing offence becomes a fetish’

The celebrated Nigeria author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie gave a lecture at the PEN World Voices festival. In this she talked about silence. When you decide to write you can no longer be silent. You make a statement.

But will you silence yourself again in a different way. Will you censor your own words in order not to offend you reader or your listener? No writer in the United States of America (this is where she held her lecture ) will be send to prison, but do writers create their own prison in carefully chosing words in order to comfort and not to upset.

I enjoy reading about Africa. New books. Old books. By African writers. By non-African writers. Novel. History. Travel. Biographies. Autobiographies. Politics. Colonialism. Poetry.
