The death of the Algerian writer Assia Djebar has reached the German-speaking world. She was, according to some, the most important female writer form North Africa.  Read more about Assia Djebar. 

Scheherazade is the famous queen and storyteller of the collection of “One thousand and one nights”.  The Algerian writers Assia Djeba, who passed away, is compared to this famous storyteller.  May the stories of Assia be told and heard and read time and time again.   

After a long illness she died in a hotel in Paris (France). She was a formidable writer and filmmaker. At the age of 18 Assia Djeba moved from her Algeria to France for studies. 

She wrote in French and for many years she lived in France. She died in a Parisian hospital. So the French Press takes some time to write about one of the outstanding writers in their language. Assia Djeba passed away. She was a member of the Academie Française.  

She passed away in a hospital in the French capital Paris. Next week she will be interred in her native Algeria, in her birthplace Cherchell, west of the capital city Algiers.
